Tablelands

On the weekend (6&7 September) we visited local towns - Mareeba, Yungaburra, Herberton to name just a few.  Most of these came into existence due to gold,  today they are full of historic buildings and museums.

This is the view from Atherton - Halloran's Hill Lookout.  Lots of farms, hills, peanut, sugarcane and banana plantations.

The small hills you see in this picture are call "The seven sisters" they were volcanoes.
Neil on old train used on the Cairns to Mareeba Line (no longer used)

Neil pointing to Lake Barrine,  once a volcano now a lake.  Below snake swimming as we were looking at the view,  the ducks kept a very close eye on this snake,  in fact they were following it at a safe distance.

This Kauri pine slab is in the tea rooms at Lake Barrine,  it's estimated that the tree was about 700 years old when cut down in the early 1900s.

Kauri pine trees,  so high!  Neil lay down on the ground to take this photo.

Note the top of the trees indicates the top of an old volcano.

The tea house has been in the same family for 4 generations.  We enjoyed scones and coffee here.

Yungaburra has an "Avenue of Honour" for all the soldiers who died in Afghanistan.  The idea was from a family that lost their son.
