Chillagoe

We left Atherton C.P. on Tuesday (9-9-2014) and arrived at Chillagoe about 2pm.  Booked in the C.P. and actually stayed in a self contained cabin as there was a school group of about 30 students also staying here -  it was tent city.

In the afternoon we looked at the local attractions,  this town evolved due to the gold rush and mining boom from a population of 1000's to under 100 today.

Our first bed in over 50 days!

This is why we stayed in cabin.

In the afternoon we visited the Ford Museum owned by 76 year old Tom Prior.  He was born here in Chillagoe, worked and raised a family.

This is his dump area

Tom has a huge shed that houses cars and trucks

Ford America offered him $100,000 for this car but he refused.

The old ore smelter,  one time over 1000 men were employed here.

10m high balancing rock

The old sea floor,  now part of the rock formations around the town.
