Atherton and surrounds

Today (3 Sept) we visited Herberton - the oldest town in the Tablelands,  "tin" was mined here in the 1800, the town grew so quickly.  Later on in the afternoon we had a look at "The Crystal Caves" - an underground adventure museum.  Rene Boissevain spent a lifetime travelling the world to collect crystallised mineral specimens, gemstones, fossils and rocks - he has a growing collection of more than 600 individual pieces.  A most interesting, informative and entertaining afternoon.

The cave like display,  we had to wear lighted helmets.

Fossils
 Geode
 Sliced geodes
The world's biggest Amethyst geode "The Empress of Uruguay", stands 3.5 metres and weighs 2.7 tonnes - just takes your breath away to see it.  The pictures do not do it justice.

Meteorite!
